What to expect
The prerequisites for every translation include understanding the subject matter, knowing the conventions of the source and target languages, and how to overcome linguistic challenges specific to the field. Patent translations are no exception. This session starts out with a presentation by Heike Holthaus on:
- the complex issues around patents, the patent process and what is involved for the patentee
- the different pathways to obtain patent protection (National route, EPC, PCT, unitary patent)
- patent language (e. g., ever wonder why in a patent things are rotatable, mountable, moveable…?)
For the second part Nadine Edwards, Nicholas Hartmann and Karen Tkaczyk will share some of the terminological difficulties they have encountered in their respective language and how they dealt with it. Bring your questions, comments and examples for the interactive panel discussion. The presenters are looking forward to a lively discussion on terminological nightmares in patent translation.
