Event Description:

In this special edition of CLD Cafe, we celebrate the art of translation by showcasing three brilliant translators going head-to-head as they each translate the same Chinese text into English and compare notes on their processes and techniques. Hear them comment on each other’s work, and discover how each translator brings their unique skill set to the table. • Luyi Yang (杨璐伊), CT is a freelance Chinese-English interpreter and translator based in Toronto, Canada. Born and raised in Beijing, China, she moved to Canada at the age of 15. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. degree and holds a master’s degree in conference interpreting (MCI) from York University. Luyi is an ATA-certified translator from English into Chinese and from Chinese into English. She is also an administrator of the Toronto Interpreters Practice Group, where she leverages her expertise to foster a supportive learning environment for fellow language professionals. Outside the world of T&I, Luyi is an avid home cook and a rock climber, she is also a two-time Canadian national champion in recurve archery.

• Roanna Yuk-Heng Cheung (张若荇), CT is an ATA-certified Chinese-to-English translator and holds dual certification in medical interpreting through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) for Mandarin and the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) for Cantonese. She specializes in legal and business translations, editing, post-editing, proofreading, and medical and conference interpreting.  She also volunteers for the Chinese Language Division (CLD) of the ATA. She graduated with an A.A.S. in Translation and Interpretation from Houston Community College and a Ph.D. in Chinese History from the University of California, Los Angeles. She grew up in Hong Kong and Beijing, and is currently living in Houston, Texas. A former historian and college instructor, she still enjoys reading and visiting bookstores in her spare time.

• Tianjue (Tony) He (何天珏), CT is an ATA-certified translator and localization professional who shares his knowledge as a lecturer at the University of Toronto teaching translation and localization, where he is happy to contribute to the institution that he himself attended. He considers himself lucky to have had the opportunity to work in various roles in the industry and remains committed to the evangelization of good localization practices.
