Since 2020, she has led the team responsible for translating United Nations documents into German and providing German UN terminology, helping ensure access for German-speaking stakeholders and the public to the work of the Organization. Established more than 50 years ago, GTS is embedded in the Documentation Division of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management and, as the only translation unit for a non-official language, holds a unique place within the UN language services architecture.

Prior to joining the United Nations, Marlies spent over 25 years in language services in the German public sector, assuming roles of increasing responsibility. Before switching continents, she built the Language Services at Germany’s Federal Office of Justice in Bonn from scratch to support multilingual legal cooperation in Europe and beyond, developing it into an in-house team of over 30 language professionals and an extensive network of freelance translators and interpreters. Earlier in her career, she worked as a freelance translator herself and was active at various academic institutions, including TH Köln, where she taught specialized translation. With a degree in translation for German, English, French and Spanish from the University of Heidelberg and periods of study abroad, she has cultivated links with academic training programmes throughout her career.

Drawing on experience from freelance practice, public-sector translation, translator training and international institutional multilingualism, Marlies is invested in exploring, together with her UN peers, how language professionals can continue to create value by combining linguistic, cultural and subject-matter expertise with new technologies.

As a dedicated urban cyclist, Marlies has always done all her commuting by bike. After nearly seven years in New York, she has come to suspect that navigating Manhattan traffic and leading a team of language professionals through challenging times have more in common than one might think: both require anticipation, adaptability and a healthy respect for momentum.

Celebrating 30 Years of the German Language Division May 15-16, 2027 in New York City Mark your calendars for this very special event in New York City celebrating the 30th anniversary of ATA’s German Language Division!
