Meet Randal Gernaat,\nthe GLD\u2019s New Web Manager<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cApril, April!\u201d Nein,\nkein Aprilscherz! April 1st<\/sup> saw the German Language Division welcome\nour new Web Manager, Randal Gernaat! Randal has taken the reins from Robin\nLimmeroth, who served as the GLD Webmaster since 2019 and assumed the role of\nGLD Assistant Administrator in November 2022. The GLD thanks Robin for her\nyears of service and is looking forward to working with Randal in the future.\nPlease note that the job title has now been updated to \u201cWeb Manager\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Read below to get to\nknow Randal in this week\u2019s installment of \u201c7 Questions for GLD Leadership\nCouncil members\u201d: <\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Name: <\/strong>Randal Gernaat<\/p>\n\n\n\n LC position:<\/strong> Web Manager<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where are you originally from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I was born and raised among the trees, lakes, and snow banks of Northern\nMichigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where do you currently live?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n New York City<\/p>\n\n\n\n How did you become a translator\/interpreter?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n One of my first jobs after graduate school was covering the major\neconomies of Western Europe for a boutique economics consulting firm in New\nYork. Soon after I was hired, my boss noted I had studied German and turned\nover large amounts of German economic and financial data that needed to be\ntranslated into English. From that\npoint on, I was inevitably involved in multiple translation projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the reasons I decided to step back\nfrom the corporate world several years ago was to pursue my interest in\ntranslation full-time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What are your areas of specialization?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Economics, business, and finance<\/p>\n\n\n\n What do you like about ATA?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the biggest downsides of freelancing \u2014\nespecially\nfor someone starting out in the industry \u2014is the lack of office\ncolleagues you can turn to with the inevitable questions. ATA offers a solution\nfor this with its many resources, ongoing training, and networking\nopportunities. It\u2019s like an extended, virtual office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tell us about your position on the GLD\nLeadership Council.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I am the new Web Manager. I look forward to building on the hard work\ndone by Robin and Karen to continue to make the GLD website a useful and\nwell-organized resource for members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anything else you would like to share?\n(hobbies, interests, etc.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n As a young German student, I was able to participate in a study tour of\nWest and East Germany in 1988. My most memorable experience was visiting\nLeipzig and the historic Thomaskirche, aka Bach\u2019s church. Our private tour of\nthe church ended on the balcony near the organ at which point the tour guide\nasked if anyone wished to play \u201cBach\u2019s organ.\u201d As a big lover of Bach\u2019s music,\nI was in awe of the opportunity to play the organ in that wonderful historic\nsetting.
