Upcoming webinars on audiovisual translation in February

February 17, 2021 By ATA-NDiv

On February 24, there will two webinars on audiovisual translation:

Subtitling: How a Text Translator Can Become a Subtitler with Deborah Wexler
February 24, 12 pm Eastern time (Recording will be provided) – ATA members $45, non-members $60

Subtitling is a translation job. You’re a translator. Shouldn’t that be enough?
Actually, it’s not. When you’re translating a book or document, you have a single stream of text to deal with.
When you are translating a movie, you have two streams of information coming at you at the same time and are limited by reading speed and the number of characters allowed. And the differences don’t stop there.

Is this specialty a good fit for your business? Register now to find out!

What will you learn?

  • The differences between text translation and subtitling
  • Subtitling formatting
  • Basic functions of subtitling software
  • The dos and don’ts of managing time and space constraints
  • How to train yourself in subtitling

Closed-Captioning and SDH: An Introduction with Mara Campbell
February 24, 1:30 pm Eastern time (Recording will be provided) – ATA members $45, non-members $60

This webinar will describe and compare the techniques of closed-captioning (CC) and subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing (SDH), both tasks that can offer entry into the audiovisual translation industry.
Presenter Mara Campbell will cover roll-up captions and pop-on captions with and without placement, as well as the pros and cons of available freeware and professional software.

What will you learn?

  • An understanding of what Closed Captioning and SDH are and what producing them entails
  • How similar and different Closed Captions and SDH are and the different audiences they serve
  • An understanding of the different types of Closed Captions and SDH and the industry standards captioners are expected to produce
  • The many freeware and professional software available to perform these tasks
  • To identify if they are qualified, capable and/or willing to learn how to perform these tasks professionally

Register for Two Webinars and Save!

Register for both Subtitling: How a Text Translator Can Become a Subtitler and Closed-Captioning and SDH and save $15.

ATA webinar Jan 26: The New Remote Interpreting Landscape: Back to the Hack

January 25, 2021 By ATA-NDiv

By the end of last year, every platform offering remote communication was being used to deliver interpreting services, regardless of its suitability for the job. And interpreters were expected to make it all work, from providing ad hoc technical services and juggling multiple digital devices to educating and working with new clients unfamiliar with the industry’s best practices.

It’s a whole new world for interpreters. Learn how to make sense of its possibilities and problems by attending this 60-minute ATA webinar on remote interpreting. We’ll also examine strategies for working with clients and knowing when to say “no” to a job.

What will you learn?

  • Difference between remote interpreting and video conference platforms
  • How to categorize remote meetings compared to video conferencing
  • How to identify the technical requirements for different kinds of meetings
  • How to decide on assignments and set reasonable limits based on your skill set
  • How to talk to clients about what is needed to provide services on the platform

You will find more info on the webinar and how to register here.

Advance call for ATA62 conference speaker nominations

December 1, 2020 By ATA-NDiv

Greetings, Nordic Division members!

ATA62 will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Oct. 27–30, 2021.

With the upper Midwest a hub of Nordic culture in the United States, the Division hopes to field a strong slate of presentation proposals.

While the formal ATA process for registering proposals has not yet started, we invite all ND members to send suggestions for topics and/or speakers to our individual addresses (below) and to divisionnd@atanet.org. The deadline is sooner than you think, and we want to be able to get a head start on planning!

We are looking for the following:

  • Your own session proposals. You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to share what you know with your colleagues!
  • Suggestions for topics. Even if you cannot present on the topic – maybe someone knows someone who can!
  • Suggestions for individuals/institutions that might be good sources of Distinguished Speaker candidates. If you have any
connections, let us know, because a personal invitation always works best.

If you want to discuss your idea with us, don’t hesitate to reach out.

We look forward to your input!
