Text written by Alexia Klein, PLD Administrator –
Dear PLDeiros!
Almost two months have passed since Paula and I were announced as the new PLD administration team at the ATA Conference in Miami. An occasion brimming with joy and warmth that I will always cherish.
As I said then and reiterate now, to me, the Portuguese Language Division represents a haven of friendliness and support. For many freelancers starting their careers, the division offers solace in the face of loneliness and uncertainty. When I was introduced to this community at my first ATA Conference, it felt like a warm, welcoming embrace.
Years have flown by since that conference in Chicago, and now I find myself embarking on the challenge of leading the PLD for the next two years. The image of the division as a friendly, cuddly entity remains my guiding light. It inspires me to convey that same warmth and support to others during my administration.
But I won’t be on this journey alone! My first accomplishment in this new role was selecting a wonderful Assistant Administrator. Paula Ianelli’s gentleness, cooperative nature, and razor-sharp focus make her a dream to work with. Moreover, we are privileged to have Julia Pedro, the outgoing Administrator, by our side. Julia’s friendliness and unwavering commitment will continue to inspire us.
We will also rely on the support and cooperation of the incredible volunteers who compose the Leadership Council. Some members, who have worked alongside Julia, include Gio Lester, Todd Harkin, Jeffrey Stewart, and Lynnea Jansen, and we welcome incoming members Everton Morais and Ana Araújo.
In closing, I must acknowledge the significant changes shaping our industry following the late 2022 launch of ChatGPT. Whether we perceive AI as a threat or an opportunity, one thing is certain: this new reality is here to stay. We must face it head-on, but we need not face it alone. I invite everyone to stand together, actively participate in upcoming PLD activities, share suggestions, and help cultivate a supportive and friendly environment. Even amidst new challenges, let us strive to foster strength and unity.
Strength and unity—this is our solemn commitment for the upcoming year!
Glad to be a part of this team. I hope to contribute in a way that perpetuates this “warm welcoming embrace” so that every new member can feel the same embrace.
