Name: Everton Morais
Where you live: New York, New York, USA
Email: evertonmorais.ny@gmail.com
What you’re doing these days: These days, I’m working to grow my interpretation business by reaching out directly to clients and also naturally growing my interpretation equipment business as a byproduct of the growth in interpretation. In my downtime, I like to keep up with my investments in the stock market and make improvements to my home.
Something you’re proud of: I’m proud of my professional and personal development. As we look around, it is easy to compare yourself to others and feel like you are just not doing well enough (I could be more active, I could travel more, I should be making more money, I should have gone to school…). Still, it is good to stop and recognize that your life was and is different from other people around you. The paths you chose, the people you have around you, the priorities you established… it all contributes to the life you are living now. Sometimes, we wish we could take that next trip. Sometimes, we just ought to be thankful for waking up healthy and whole.
A bit of your background: I was born and raised in Jaú, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. I moved to the US with my family at the age of 13, just looking for better opportunities. I’m the first and only in my family to hold a bachelor’s degree. I love to find opportunities around me. Whether it is the opportunity to travel a little when work takes me to a new place, the opportunity to create a new source of revenue that just happened to pop up in front of me, or the opportunity to help someone in a way they just couldn’t help themselves… The Bible is right when it says, “It is better to give than to receive.”
How long have you been with ATA and PLD? I have been with the ATA since 2010 and a PLD member since 2016.
What did ATA membership and/or the PLD bring to you? I still get calls from time to time from agencies who got my name through the ATA. Both the ATA and PLD offer me plenty of opportunities to learn and to grow, but above all, they offer me a network of people who can help me be more effective as a service provider to my clients. Suppose I need more Portuguese interpreters for an assignment or a translator with gaming experience, for example. In those cases, I know I can find those individuals directly or indirectly through the ATA, PLD, and the networks I’ve built through them.
Current project (or last/future interesting project/activities): I am currently rebuilding my website and constantly working on my social media presence.
A major challenge(s) in your career: The major challenge I have is unpredictability. It is hard to make commitments for future dates when a job might just come up… so I try to make the best of it all… even though I often find my plate a little fuller than I would want. But it is a matter of time until I feel I can be more selective about the assignments I want to take on, and besides… I love my work…so even when it is tiring, I still enjoy it.
Do you have any hobbies? If so, what are they? My hobbies are Mountain biking, Stand-up Paddle Boarding, and traveling. It may not look like it, but I also hit the gym pretty constantly. I love listening to music and especially watching live bands/artists.
What is your favorite book in Portuguese-language literature? Sonho Grande by Cristiane Correa. It tells the story of some pretty smart guys who did quite well in their investment choices.
What books are currently on your reading list? Influence by Robert Cialdini.
Where is the best place to connect with you? Instagram @evinterpreter.
Thank you.
We really appreciate the opportunity to learn a little more about you.
