What you’re doing these days: Working on translations. Catching up with new technologies, especially AI and how to leverage translations with AI.
Something you’re proud of: My 52-year career as a translator and interpreter.
A bit of your background: I was born in Brazil, in a multilingual family. At 16 I came to the US as an exchange student and upon returning to Brazil, worked with US companies and became a translator. I also have a bachelor’s degree in industrial design. Since my exchange student experience, I became very close to my host family and this relationship continues to this day. I moved to the US in 1998 with a Diversity Visa and 5 years later became a US citizen (in addition to my Brazilian and Italian citizenships).
How long have you been with ATA and PLD? 26 years.
What did ATA membership and/or the PLD bring to you? Networking with fellow Portuguese translators and those of many other languages, and the opportunity to be the PLD Treasurer and PLD Data Designer years ago when I learned to appreciate all the work that ATA volunteers, staff and members do.
Current project (or last/future interesting project/activities): I published a children’s book in 2022. On January 6th I did a presentation at the City Library about my first book, written in Portuguese. Speaking a mixture of English and Portuguese to toddlers and parents was challenging and fun. As for work, the usual diversity of projects, from personal documents to software/hardware, healthcare and legal projects.
A major challenge(s) in your career: Keeping up with technology. “Never slow down, always strive to learn more” is my motto.
Do you have any hobbies? If so, what are they? Walking, reading and listening to music.
What is your favorite book in Portuguese-language literature? All of Monteiro Lobato’s books!
What books are currently on your reading list? Sapiens, Democracy Awakening, Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain, and, of course, Xexeco the Spectacled Bear.
Where is the best place to connect with you? Email.
