Dr. Haber\u2019s two-part presentation, \u201cSeeing Voices: Using Light to Restore and Preserve Early Recorded Sound,\u201d will discuss his use of techniques developed for particle physics research to scan and preserve some of the earliest known sound recordings, including Alexander Graham Bell\u2019s restored voice (1885) and Native American voices from the early 20th century. Part one will focus on the techniques, while part two will focus on the audio collections themselves. Dr. Haber is a Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2013. His work has been profiled in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2014\/05\/19\/a-voice-from-the-past\" target=\"_blank\">The New Yorker<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2013\/09\/130925-genius-macarthur-carl-haber-sound-bell\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Geographic magazine<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-physicist-whos-saving-the-music-1440169464\" target=\"_blank\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Help us organize a social event for the division in San Francisco!
