On Thursday, October 27, at 6:15 p.m. me<\/span>mbers of ATA\u2019s Sci-Tech divisio<\/span>n gathered in the lobby of the M<\/span>\"\"<\/a>arriott<\/span> <\/span>H<\/span>otel Copley Place to walk to an Indian <\/span>restaurant, Kashmir, on<\/span> Newbury Street. Alicja Yarborough, who had organized this event, awaited <\/span>us there for o<\/span>ur annual division dinner.<\/span> It was <\/span>a short walk <\/span>from the hotel <\/span>past Boston’s brown<\/span>stone hous<\/span>es in cold rainy weather. We were happ<\/span>y to be welcomed <\/span>b<\/span>y Alicja at the resta<\/span>urant, which had such a pleasant atmosphere.<\/span> The 34 members attending were seated at tables rese<\/span>rved for our division in a private space.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the first appet<\/span>\"\"<\/a>izer arrived, we had some tim<\/span>e t<\/span>\"\"<\/a>o get to know the fellow Sci-Tech Division members <\/span>at our <\/span>table. As a relative new comer to translation and interpretation, I was happy to start a conversat<\/span>ion with the thr<\/span>ee members sharing my table. We talked about our specialties<\/span>, language pairs a<\/span>nd direction, and our experience with sc<\/span>ience, technical and <\/span>m<\/span>edical translations, as well as our experiences at this year\u2019s co<\/span>nference. As it turned out, two m<\/span>embers at my table shared my langu<\/span>age p<\/span>air, and I was pleased to hear their advice. <\/span><\/p>\n

Appetizers arrived at the tables in bowl<\/span>s and<\/span> copper dishes: “Vegetable Pakorah,” some<\/span>\"\"<\/a> freshly <\/span>cut<\/span>\"\"<\/a> vegetables, deep fried in chick-pea batter and “Sheek kebab,” pieces of Tandoori baked minced lamb seasoned with chopped <\/span>onions, chopped bell pe<\/span>ppers, herbs and spices, ser<\/span>ved with three kinds of different chutney and Indian “Naan” bread. The red chutney was so hot that some <\/span>m<\/span>embers ord<\/span>ered \u201cLassi\u201d, a tradit<\/span>ion<\/span>al <\/span>yoghurt-based drink of India, to quench th<\/span>e heat of the spicy food. <\/span><\/p>\n

Before the main courses arrived the Division Administrator, Karen Tkaczyk, introduced he<\/span>rself and g<\/span>ave a little speech. She thanked Alicja Yarborough for organizing the museum visit and the dinner. K<\/span>ar<\/span>\"\"<\/a>en then <\/span>introduced the o<\/span>ther founding members of the \u201cnew\u201d Sci-Tech, Assistant Administra<\/span>tor Steven <\/span>Marzuola, and Stephanie Strobel. Karen welcomed Nicolas Hartma<\/span>n, the outgoing<\/span> A<\/span>TA president an<\/span>\"\"<\/a>d enthusiastic member of the <\/span>Sci-Tech Division. Karen then introduced other division volunteers: members of the Leadership Council and the Nominating Committee, most of whom attended the dinner. She <\/span>pointed out that this yea<\/span>r the division was very s<\/span>trongly represented with 11 presentations, and she encouraged everyone to attend the Division\u2019s Annual Meeting on Saturday from 2:30-3:30 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>\"\"<\/a>here was quite a variety of entr\u00e9es: one called “Chicken Tikka Masala”, a Tandoori<\/span> style white meat chicken in <\/span>a tomat<\/span>o cream sauce. A second, “Dal Makhani” contained lent<\/span>ils saut\u00e9ed in<\/span> butter with fresh herbs and s<\/span>pices, garnished with fresh coriander. Other dishes included “Shahi Aloo Gobhi,” cauliflower and potatoes cooked with tomato, onion, herbs and spices, and “Kabuli Chaana,” whole chick peas cooked with onions and tomatoes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Division member Alfred Hellstern and Stephanie Strobel took photographs of the event, visiting table to <\/span>\"\"<\/a>table so they could catch all 34 members happ<\/span>ily chatting and<\/span> eating. Finally, a delicious desert “Galu<\/span>b <\/span>Jamum,” <\/span>a dish<\/span> of two deep fried wheat cake balls, soaked in syrup, completed our menu. <\/p>\n

Along with<\/span> enjoying the wonderful menu, we were happy to have met our disti<\/span>nguished group of colleagues and friends. We <\/span>exchanged business cards to k<\/span>eep in touch.<\/p>\n

It was<\/span> a fabulous event, and I look forward to meeting even more division members at the Sci-Tech Division dinner during next year\u2019s ATA Annual Conference in San <\/span>Diego.<\/p>\n

Susanna Weerth<\/span><\/b> works as an English \u2013 German freelance translator and interpr<\/span>\"\"<\/a>eter. She specializes in life sciences (medical, biological and pharmaceutical), patent, and general legal translation and medical interpretation. She holds a professional certification as medical assistant and worked several years as medical technician in a physician’s office and a clinical laboratory at the Veterinary University Clinics of Munich. She received a “Diplom” (MS equivalent) in Biology and a “Doktor” (PhD equivalent) in Biology\/Neuroimmunology from the University of Munich and the Max-Planck-Institute of Neurobiology, Germany. She worked in a clinical laboratory in Oncology in Germany and after relocating to the US for several years in neuroscience research in laboratories at different universities and the National Institute of Health. <\/span>She transitioned into translation by completing the “Certificate in German to English Translation” at the New York University in 2010 and started interpreting the same year with courses at Georgetown and Cross Cultural Communication. She has also taken biomedical writing and editing courses. She is currently involved at the board of the National Capitol Area Translators Association (NCATA) and the Nominating Committee of the Science & Technology Division and NCATA.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
