by Mery Molenaar, S&TD Administrator
We’re thrilled to introduce you to the newest addition to our Leadership Council: Isabel Lansberry! Isabel joined us in January as our division’s Social Media Coordinator and Facebook Manager.
Mery recently had the opportunity to interview her and ask her about her background, what drew her to volunteer for this position, and what she is most excited to bring to our division’s online presence.
Mery Molenaar: First of all, welcome to the Science & Technology Division, Isabel! We are excited that you have joined our Leadership Council. To start with, can you tell us about yourself and your background, where you are from and the type of work you do?
Isabel Lansberry: Thank you for the warm welcome, Mery! I’m Isabel, originally from Colombia where I earned my medical degree at the Universidad de Caldas. I’ve been deeply involved in language and medicine for over 17 years, specializing in medical translation and terminology. My academic journey continued in the United States, where I obtained certification in translation from New York University. Currently, I am part of an ISO-certified translation team at Publicis Sapient. My role primarily involves translating critical cancer information for the National Cancer Institute’s website, where I apply SEO best practices and manage terminology to enhance online visibility and accessibility. Additionally, my studies in epidemiology and genetics have been invaluable in assisting with the specific type of medical content I translate, enriching my understanding of complex concepts and enabling me to effectively bridge the gap between intricate medical ideas and the public.
MM: Like many scientific, medical and technical translators, you took a roundabout path in your career. Tell us about how you became a translator with your specialization.
IL: Absolutely! My journey into the world of translation, particularly in the life sciences, is a testament to life’s unexpected turns. Originating from a medical background, I initially embarked on my career as a dedicated medical doctor. However, curiosity and fate led me to a novel opportunity as a medical editor, a role that intriguingly combined my medical expertise with my burgeoning passion for language. This dual interest not only became my new vocation but a gateway to a rich, rewarding career. Embracing continuous learning, I delved into epidemiology, translation, medical genetics, and most recently, medical terminology and SEO for medical websites. My medical background has been invaluable, enabling me to bring a nuanced, informed perspective to every project.
MM: What is your favorite type of text to translate, and what makes your work fun for you?
IL: Translating technical texts on the forefront of medical research is where my heart lies. With each assignment, not only do I get a front-row seat to groundbreaking discoveries but I also get the opportunity to coin new terms (neologisms) in my translation field. There’s a profound sense of satisfaction knowing my work aids healthcare professionals with quality Spanish resources. It’s this unique blend of learning and contributing that makes my work exhilarating.
MM: You recently joined us as S&TD’s Social Media Coordinator. What made you decide to volunteer for this position?
IL: Reaching a pivotal moment in my translation career, I felt compelled to give back to an association that’s been instrumental in my continuous education and professional networking. Volunteering as the Social Media Coordinator and Facebook Manager for the S&TD seemed like the perfect avenue to contribute.
MM: Do you use social media to promote your own business and services? If so, in what way? Or if not, why not?
IL: While I’ve not leveraged social media directly to promote my business services due to my long-standing in-house role, it’s been an invaluable tool for networking and staying updated on education, events, and news within the language industries.
MM: I can totally relate to that, and it might apply to many of our members. As you know, of course, the S&TD has several active social media channels. Why do you think social media is important for a division like ours?
IL: Social media is really important for our division because it helps us reach out and connect with a lot of different people. Our members come from all sorts of places and have different interests, so by using various social media platforms, we can make sure there’s something for everyone.
Using social media lets us talk and share information quickly. Whether it’s new research findings, updates in technology, or just news about our field, we can get it out there right away. This keeps everyone in the loop and up to date.
It’s also great for building a community. Through social media, we can support each other, share experiences, and offer advice. It’s like a big online meeting place where everyone can learn, ask questions, and help out. Plus, it’s a way for people who are new to the field to find mentors and for those with more experience to share their knowledge.
MM: As our new Social Media Coordinator, do you have any specific ideas or plans on how our division can further use social media?
IL: I believe in the organic growth of our social media presence, guided by the needs and contributions of our division’s members. It’s a collaborative space, one that thrives on openness and the collective flow of ideas and inspirations.
MM: In your profile on the S&TD website you state that you work remotely from Denver, Colorado. That sounds like a dream for many outdoor lovers. Do you spend a lot of your free time in the mountains?
IL: Yes, the mountains have always been a part of my soul. Growing up in the Andes imbued me with a deep love for the outdoors—a connection that Colorado rekindles every day. From winter skiing to summer hiking, and the simple joy of exploring this beautiful state — living here allows me to blend work with my love for nature. It’s a balance that enriches my professional and personal and family life.
