With our 10th anniversary GLD in Europe workshop Vienna fast approaching, we would like to introduce our main invited speaker and two external guest speakers.
Our invited speaker is Dagmar Gromann, who will be holding sessions on Saturday on Gender/Bias in MT/LLM and AI Prompting, as well as a third session comprising practical exercises.
Dagmar Gromann (http://dagmargromann.com) is an Associate Professor at the University of Vienna, with a background in linguistics and computer science. Prior to this position, she worked as a post-doc at IIIA-CSIC in Barcelona, Spain, and TU Dresden, Germany. Her research focuses on computational linguistics and language technologies, including their socio-technical implications, such as gender bias. She led the working group to develop the curriculum for the master’s degree Multilingual Technologies focused on computational linguistics, which is a joint degree with FH Campus Wien.
On Sunday, the workshop will feature two sessions by external speakers, Expert in the Lead by Michael Bailey and the Transcreation Session with Q & A by Nina Sattler-Hovdar.
Michael Bailey is an experienced (Austrian) German to (British) English translator focusing on financial market supervision law. As a freelancer until 2014, he worked with customers within the Austrian public and private sectors, and since 2014 has been involved in translation of all aspects of banking supervision and resolution – from the cradle (authorisation/licensing) to the grave (orderly wind-down in resolution). He has translated a wide variety of primary and secondary Austrian legislation, soft law instruments, as well as web content and financial literacy information at the FMA. While being LangTech savvy, pre-dominantly as a power user of Trados and MultiTerm (since 2004), Michael remains a strong advocate of the preservation of human translators and interpreters, championing the profession’s need to take a leading role, rather than being relegated to having a subsidiary role in the MITL and HITL solutions actively pushed by the industry. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the European Trados User Group, and a member of Universitas (the Austrian Interpreter’s and Translators’ Association) and the Chartered Institute of Linguists. He also writes a personal translation blog (www.transl8r.eu) called “In-house translation – outside the box”.
Nina Sattler-Hovdar is known as a pioneer and advocate of transcreation in the language services space.
With a master’s degree in translation and years of full-time work in market research and consultant roles for multinational companies and advertising agencies, Nina started building her transcreation business in the late 1990s.
As a keen observer and analyst of the language services industry over the past 25+ years, she has written books and many articles and contributions on transcreation. She is also a frequent speaker, trainer, and transcreation consultant for corporate translation teams, language services companies, professional associations, and colleagues around the world.

In addition to our external speakers, workshop attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy sessions by GLD members Aaron Maddox (The Cold World of Translation), Kelly Neudorfer (Cultural Sensitivity and MT and Crash Course in AutoHotKey), and Karen Leube & Robin Limmeroth (Professional Forum: Ethics) throughout the weekend, along with reports on the ATA Conference and a look back at 10 years of GLD in Europe.
The workshop’s Rahmenprogramm includes a walking tour of Vienna on Friday afternoon, dinner at Café Museum on Friday evening, and a Networking Dinner on Saturday at Siebensternbräu.

Robin Limmeroth is a freelance German>English translator, transcreator, and proofreader with 25 years of translation experience in various sectors. After graduating from Millersville University in 1990, she worked for Infratest Burke Marketingforschung and Mainz University of Applied Sciences, among others. Based in Mainz, Germany, she provides language services to a number of market and marketing research companies, advertising agencies, universities, publishers, and direct clients.
Robin is the Assistant Administrator of the GLD and part of the GLD in Europe team. She also served as Web Manager from 2020-2023.
