7 questions for GLD Leadership Council members: Calendar Girl

Name:

Stella Waltemade

Position:

Calendar Girl

Where are you originally from?

Cologne, Germany

Where do you currently live?

Munich, Germany

How did you become a translator?

After my “Abitur”, I went to language school to train as a foreign language correspondent in French and Spanish. I then did a Masters in Political Science, moved to the US, then to the UK, and, after some twists and turns, gained a Certificate in Translation from the Chartered Institute of Linguists in the UK. I’ve been a very happy freelance translator ever since.

What are your areas of specialization?

I started out doing creative translations for marketing and advertising. Today, I specialize in audio-visual translation and directing for voice over and have recently completed my first lip-sync project.

What do you like about ATA?

The networking and the (so far only occasional) trips to the ATA conferences.

Tell us about your volunteer activities for the GLD.

Many years ago, at the ATA conference in San Francisco, Matt Baird asked me if I would like to take over the calendar of events. And I did. It’s always fun to search the web for seminars and events that might be of interest. Let me know if you would like to add something.

Anything else you would like to share? (hobbies, interests, etc.)

I’m currently brushing up on my French and Latin and am interested in all things “language and AI”. Outside of languages, I enjoy meditation, weightlifting, theatre, concerts, travelling… Occasionally I work as a DJane (love love love).
