November 2023

Thank you to everyone who attended our division dinner at ATA64 in Miami. We held a joint networking dinner this year together with the Medical Division, which was attended by more than 40 guests.

Around 20 members attended our virtual Annual Meeting in September. If you missed the meeting or would like to review what we discussed, the slides and meeting minutes are available on our website under the Resources tab.

Some other announcements:

  • We are looking for one or two volunteers to help out with social media and manage the division’s Facebook account—no experience necessary! Many thanks to Anees Gharzita for her excellent work during the last couple of years. We will miss her Happy Friday Science posts!
  • We would also like to thank Blog Co-editor Kenneth McKerrow for his excellent contributions to the S&TD blog for the past two years. Pavitra Baxi will be taking over Kenneth’s role as Blog Editor, in addition to her current role as the division’s X.com admin.
  • Our next virtual Networking Hour will be held on Wednesday, November 29, at 12 pm EST. Please send your RSVP to atascitechevents@gmail.com to receive a Zoom link to attend. As always, this meeting is for S&TD members only. Not a member yet? Find out how to join the division.
  • Have you listened to our latest SciTech Podcast lately? We recently released two new episodes on SoundCloud and Spotify:
    • Episode 3 – From 13,000 ft. above sea level to 3,000 ft. below ground—not your ordinary interpreting assignment, with Pedro Valdez and Sadot Marquez
    • Episode 4 – Wearing a different hat: From legal translator to interpreter in the construction industry, with Magdalena Parol
  • We have posted an interview with Matthew Schlecht on our website blog about his ATA64 presentation Chemical Names, Chemical Structures: What’s a Translator to Do?
  • It is never too late to think ahead, so let’s start thinking about next year’s conference to be held in Portland, Oregon. What did you like or miss at ATA64? What kind of sessions or topics are you interested in? Do you live in the Portland area, and know a great restaurant for our networking dinner? Please email your suggestions to divisionS_TD@atanet.org.
